Blog ALDS Game 1 #Rays V #Rangers

The Rays fresh off of their thrilling wild card run went in to Texas to take on the AL West champs.  Texas sent staff ace C.J. Wilson 16-7, 2.94 to the mound against rookie Matt Moore 1-0, 2.89.  Moore was making just his 2nd career big league start.  As the game started the field was covered in shadows.

Rays 2nd baseman Ben Zorbist got drilled in the elbow in the 2nd inning.  He stayed in the game.  Old man Johnny Damon hammered a Wilson pitch over the RF wall to draw first blood in the playoffs.  That was only the 3rd HR Wilson had given up to a left handed hitter this season.  Chris Gentry, making only his 2nd start in left had a ball bounce off of his glove.  It was ruled a hit but a more experienced left fielder catches that one.  Gentry made a nice play for the 2nd out.  Wilson did not look good early as he is tossing to many right down the middle of the plate.  Matt Joyce came up with a big two out single to make it 3-0.

Wilson got a strikeout to start the 3rd.  Evan Longoria singled and Zorbist reached on a bunt.  After Damon struck out Kelly Shoppach pounded one over the center field fence to put the Rays in command at 6-0.

With two down in the 5th Damon reached on an error.  It proved to be a two run error because Shoppach stepped up and clubbed his 2nd HR of the game to go up 8-0.  The catcher batted .176 with 11 HR for the season.  This hit made him 3-3 with 5 RBI in the game.  He finished at 4-5.

C.J. Wilson went a rough 5 innings and allowed 6 earned runs.  He walked one, struck out 6 and threw 103 pitches in the loss.  One bright spot for the Rangers.  Reliever Scott Feldman went three scoreless to save the bullpen.  Tampa Bay rookie Matt Moore pitched a masterful game.  He went 7 innings and allowed just two hits.   He gave up zero runs and struck out 6 while picking up the win.  Former MVP Josh Hamilton was the only Ranger who could touch him.  He went 2-3 off of him with a double. The rest of the team went 0-20 with two walks.

The Rays added a 9th inning run to make it 9-0.

Game 2 of the series is tomorrow evening.  It will feature a pitching match up of Derek Holland 16-5, 3.95 against James Shields 16-12, 2.82.

We will be discussing a ton of MLB playoffs this Sunday.  Check us out and give us a call 5pm CST.

Rating the NFL Quarterbacks-Time For A Change

When any positive all time NFL statistic has Tony Romo ranked 4th  my BS-ometor immediately starts beeping.  That is all the proof I need that a rating system needs to be changed.  The NFL passer rating looks even less important when you consider that Shaun Hill and David Gerrard both rank higher than Roger Staubach.  Those numbers simply lie.

I will admit that I thought the phrase "cool as the other side of the pillow" was kind of  neat.(when I was 13)  The truth is I usually find ESPN to be tiresome and awfully self righteous.  That does not mean they are not correct about changing the QB rating system.  The only other thing you need to know about the old system is that a perfect score was 158.3.  To make a comparison to something that is commonly accepted consider that Bo Derek was once considered a perfect 10 not a perfect 10 and and 5/8.

A quick primer on the fundamentals of Total Quarterback Rating:
Scoring: 0-100, from low to high. An average QB would be at 50.
Win Probability: All QB plays are scored based on how much they contribute to a win. By determining expected point totals for almost any situation, Total QBR is able to apply points to a quarterback based on every type of play he would be involved in.
Dividing Credit: Total QBR factors in such things as overthrows, underthrows, yards after the catch and more to accurately determine how much a QB contributes to each play.
Clutch Index: How critical a certain play is based on when it happens in a game is factored into the score.
Let me do something I rarely do and give ESPN a little credit for making this effort.  It will be interesting to see how the two systems compare at the end of the year.

After one game here is the QB rating list.  Look at our guy Romo again.  He is rated to have had the 12th best performance of the week.  If you saw the game you know that he was pathetic when the game was on the line and handed the win to the Jets.  It kind of seems like that is a habit for him which is probably why I felt bothered enough to write this post.  A 101.9 rating is a pretty darn good number and I do not feel his performance was that good.  Take a look at Cam Newton's rating and then ask yourself if  8 QB's in the world played better than him.

Here is the total QBR list after week one. This list does a little better putting them in order.  I am much more comfortable with the scores given to the performances.  What Romo did on the field kind of looked like a 62.9 when compared to the game Aaron Rodgers had. (91.1)  I still have an issue with Cam Newton's pretty low number at 75.7 but overall the list is better.

Cam Newton the Next Mike VIck? No Way!!!

I suspected Cam Newton would have some success because of his running back type skills.  I thought their was even a shot at some point that he would end up playing the RB position.  That is going out on the limb a bit but that is where the fun is.  One game is not nearly enough to make a decision.  It is enough to make you wonder how good this dude is.

The sports world seems to be going crazy for Newton based on his record setting opening game performance.  He went 24-37 with 2 TD's and an INT.  He also scrambled 8 time for 18 yards and a touchdown.  His QB rating was an impressive 110.4.

The radio shows and bloggers are making comparisons to Michael Vick already.  That is premature and a bit silly in my opinion.  Every athletic black QB is not Michael Vick.  As much as the lemmings will always claim "that guy" to be.  I would not make that comparison at all just like I would never compare Barry Sanders to Earl Campbell.  It would be similar to do so but much easier to see why it is stupid.  They are both good and African American, right?

Michael Vick is an electric runner with a big arm.  He is 6'0" 215 with  some of the Houdini moves that made Sander special.  Newton is a huge 6'5" 250 with good running skills and instincts.  His first performance indicates that he might have a real major league arm.  You could not watch that game and not be impressed with his power and touch.  I did not think he had that.  Time will tell if he really does.

I think the better player to compare him to is Ben Rothlisberger.  I doubt he will win as much given the situation he has been dumped into.  I also think he will probably out produce him from a numbers stand point if he has even some of the precision he displayed in the tiny sample size.  I suppose if you are hung up on the color issue you could go with Josh Freeman in Tampa Bay.  I think it is about time to stop using race as a means to compare anything.  Including QB's in the National Football League.
